Tabletop Zen Garden

Remember these?

Well, believe it or not I've already figured out what to do with them. At least for the time being. I decided my coffee table needed it's very own Zen Garden.

I picked up some 1'x1' mirrors, 6 to be exact, while perusing the second-hand store a few weeks ago. They sat around while I was figuring out just what I wanted to do.

Then came the rocks from our trip to the beach.

Today, I purchased a candle holder thingy that held 5 candles. I liked it and had been wanting something similar, naturally I bought it.

While Hans was away, I decided to wash all of my new thrifty finds and think about all the cool things I could do. Still was oblivious to my own little plan, I sat down and started putting it all together. I wasn't even sure if it would turn out well, but I had to try.

I began by laying out the mirrors, trying to decide how many were needed and where they would go, and decided 3 mirrors in a row would be fine. Then, starting with the center mirror, I added the poster putty stuff to the back and flipped the mirror over and into place, following with the other 2.

After the mirrors were set, I cleaned them and added my candle holder. Then it was time for me to drag out the rocks. I kid you not, that bag weighed about 50 pounds, easily. (I'm sure glad there were 3 of us who carried rocks back from the beach instead of just one.)

Anyway, I began placing the rocks randomly (and gently) all around the candles and ended up with my new Zen Garden.

The best part about this project is that it cost me a grand total of 12 DKK ($2.29)
Mirrors: 9 DKK ($1.72)
Candle Holder: 3 DKK ($0.57)
Rocks: Free, courtesy of mother nature

What do you think?

  1. Beautiful...is it practical? Can you still put the drinks somewhere and put your feet up? For me, lately comfort trumps beauty (says the girl with two Lazy Boys in the living room). That said, I do like it...especially the free part.

  2. Yeah, it's pretty practical. My laptop hangs off the edge by about 1/4 inch, but that's not a big deal. There's plenty of room for feet and drinks. Score!

  4. Grandma told us about your coffee table. Just took a look online and it's incredible. C and I are both very impressed with your creativity and 'artistry.'. Hugs to you and Hans both!!! Love Uncle Chuck & Zanda.

  6. I am glad to know that I'm not the only one who likes collecting rocks. My husband seems to think I've lost my mind. Maybe because he always gets to carry them back.
