All Natural Wednesdays: Natural Herbs - Oil of Oregano

I've decided to start a weekly posting of all things natural. I plan on featuring 'green' products, recipes, etc. Anything goes as long as it's all natural, organic, or eco-friendly. I hope you will enjoy learning about them as much as I do, and maybe even try a few.

I want to share a little secret. It could very well be a big secret to some people, I know I was in the dark for some time.

What's the secret?

Well, that is oil of oregano. No, not your standard oregano used for cooking, that is the Origanum Marjoram. The oil of oregano comes from the Origanum Vulgare, and let me tell ya, this stuff is amazing!

Depending on what you're using it for, you can buy it in either liquid or capsule form. Almost every natural health or nutrition store has some, and I personally have used the products from North American Herb and Spice.

Either way, as long as you make sure it's not the oregano used in your Italian cooking and that the carvacrol concentration it is at least 70% you're good to go.

Oil of oregano has some pretty awesome health benefits and medicinal values. It's an antibacterial, antiviral, anti fungal, and anti parasitic. It reduces pain and inflammation, and can be used to treat many ailments including (but certainly not limited to): sore throats, yeast, acne, eczema, psoriasis, bruises, warts, boils, athlete's foot, nail fungus, dandruff, such as ringworm.

It's best in treating skin infections, digestive problems, respiratory problems and congestion, strengthening your immune system, helping your joints and muscles to be more flexible, and can even be used as a mouthwash.

Oil of oregano is safe for pets too. Just a few drops in their food will help with most respiratory problems. My mom has used it on her bulldog with great results. It is also good for animals with all 3 types of mange.

You can use it as an organic cleaner, as well. Just mix the oil with alcohol and water into a spray bottle and you've got a great cleaner for darn near everything, even fruit and vegetables. When you're done cleaning, you can even spray it on yourself.

Pretty cool, huh?

You can find more information about oil of oregano herehere, and here. I hope you will check them out.

Have you ever tried oil of oregano?
What are some of the things you've used it for?
Do you have any home remedies you'd like for me to share?

  1. Great POST!!!!

I've heard of people using oil of oregano for parasites and in herbal treatments for Lyme Disease. It's supposed to be amazing stuff. One word of caution though, it can cause major detox issues for people (ie: if they have a high parasite load, it can cause massive die off in the body which can make them feel pretty sick). If somebody goes this route, they might want to consider detoxing at the same time.
