Thrift Store Decorating

I can't believe it's already Friday! Where has the week gone? The weather here in Denmark has been beautiful, albeit hot and humid a couple of days. Today, however, the weather is not so pleasant, it's cloudy, windy, and cold (well, around 60F, but feels much cooler).

Anyway, that's not what this post is about. You see, it's been so busy this week because we've been shopping and rearranging furniture most of the week. At least, that's what it's felt like.

One of the second hand stores had a 50% off everything, the entire week. We just so happened to score some pretty nice deals, and all for around $150 (800 DKK).

On a side note: We own one, and only one piece of furniture that is brand spankin' new, my bed. (Our bed is actually 2 twins connected together, it's pretty common here.)

Here's some of the things we bought. (Not pictured: a dresser and bed)

We also got this baby.
The dining table we had was traded for a 6 pack of beer, the chairs that went with it were far from sturdy. We needed something asap, and that's what we got.
Because the chairs weren't so great, we borrowed 4 chairs from my in-laws. While I didn't think they were ugly, they certainly didn't go with the decor, or the table.
I apologize about the picture quality, but it's the only one. (I tried to avoid pictures with the chairs.)

Anyway, I've been wanting a round table for the small space, but they're not very common over here. (I'm learning patience. Very slowly.) This one is perfect, it's old, dark, and charming. I am planning on refinishing it, but I'm not sure when my darling husband will allow me to.

From there we move to the living area. This place has been a thorn in my side. I love it, while despising it at the same time. Our furniture just doesn't work here.

This is what we started with.

It then evolved to this.
While I like this layout, there's just not enough room for the sofas. I adore the sofas, so those will definitely stick around for a while, I just have to figure out where to put them.

This is how it looked from there.
The most annoying problem was the TV. It was just too low. Not to mention the fact that the coffee table is just far too big.

I decided, yesterday, the TV would be moving up. I began removing everything, including shelves from the entertainment center. I recruited Hans for help, and I'm sure he wanted to strangle me.

It's not perfect, and I'm still not completely happy with it, but it's a lot better than it was.
I still need to add a support for the TV, that's why it's not centered, but the coffee table is no longer in the way.

And the rest of the space, well, this is what it looks like.

  4. I think you need to keep your eye out for a smaller coffee table, the one you got looks huge for your space. Maybe two small square tables?

    Other than that, looks great!

  7. First of all, I love that you live in Denmark. I toured there with a music group from college in 2002 and fell. in. love. By FAR my favourite country ever.
Second, I'm not a decorator (maybe YOU can give ME tips), so I've got nothing to suggest. But great finds! My thrift store never gives me anything I get excited about. But maybe I need to go more often... :)

  8. Thanks for stopping by Melanna! I love living here. The only two places I've lived, aside from Texas are Ottawa, and now Holstebro. While I adore Canada, Denmark suits me best. I never in my life dreamt I'd live in Europe, and now here I am. Loving every bit of it!

I'm no decorator either, but I think I've done alright with what I've got. Check at the thrift stores often, I usually go once a week to get the good stuff.

  12. Wow! You have been pretty busy... I think the lighting on the wall is a very good idea, you should stick with it...the make the whole place look so different and nice.

  13. I think the first layout you showed would work best, without a coffee table. The media center wouldn't be so dominant in the room. Maybe you could get two small pedestal-type tables (just big enough to put a drink or the remote on) and your space would look a lot bigger. I love the shape of your sofas! Space planning is SO difficult, isn't it?!

  15. @Vicki, I agree with you. Unfortunately, the media center won't fit on that wall, or any of the other walls. Cost and size are huge factors. I would definitely prefer something smaller and not so overpowering. Still trying to convince my husband to get a smaller table.

@Laura, Thanks for dropping by, and thanks for following me!
